I just bought a Savage, have had lots of others over the years, Harleys,Triumph, BSA, BMW, CZ, Indian, Suzuki. I don't think the Savage is a "beginners" bike, yes it's a good one to start out on, I don't think it's a "girls" bike, yes it's light and easy to handle, but I had mine on the PA 'Pike the other day holding at a steady 70. I started out from red light to red light with some guy on a Harley, we went side by side. For me, performance is plenty good for the street and the highway. My rear suspension is a little stiff even at the lowest setting, but I have to say that it has gotten slightly softer with use, how much softer it will get, I have yet to see.
As for dealers, they want sales, the more they sell and the higher priced bikes they sell the better for them, not necessarily you. I'll be 65 soon, started with my own bike about 1951, before that, on my dad's. What else can I tell you? Try it, (Savage) if you don't like it, sell it.
